My Artist Statement
My pottery journey began almost thirty years ago at the University of North Carolina in Wilmington where I earned a Bachelors of Fine Arts Degree in Ceramics and Sculpture. After graduation my focus went to educating both children and adults in various workshops throughout the community. Teaching others the ways of clay brings great joy to me and helps me find purpose in life. While creating and growing in my own practice I have learned that clay is my calm. A place where I can exist and everything falls into place, it is both grounding and gratifying. A quiet intimacy is present between the clay and myself while working, where all emotions can be processed and channeled, forming a means of expression. In each piece crafted there is a part of me that resides. I focus on quality of form and exploring imaginative surfaces through carving and exterior designs. I treat each piece like a painting in the round, with the vessel becoming a sculpted, three dimensional canvas. I am always learning and evolving, my work reflects the seasons of my life and all it entails.
